Beginner Keyboards (That Won't Break The Bank!)

Monday, August 19, 2019 by Breanna Kalla | Uncategorized

So you signed up for piano lessons and now you need an instrument! One of the most common questions I get asked when a new student signs up is, 'Do we need a real piano?'. While all of us piano teachers love hearing that our students already have a decent upright piano at home to practice on, the short answer is, no - not right away at least. The bad news is, that 12 key Fisher-Price piano that Aunt Lisa got your little musician last Christmas isn't going to cut it (sorry, folks). The good news is, there are actually some really decent options (under $1000!) on the market for beginner piano students right now.

The thing to remember when shopping for your child's first instrument is that you want something they will be able to grow into, and these instruments meet that mark. I always tell my families to look for something with 88 weighted keys. I think the thing that I love most about keyboards/digital pianos for beginners is that when the time comes to upgrade to an acoustic instrument, they are generally very easy to sell - you'll probably see a good chunk of your cash back too! Here are my favorite first-instrument options that won't break the bank. Happy shopping!

Roland FP-10 Portable Digital Piano

$699.99

FP-10 Portable Digital Piano w/Speakers - Black

'The FP-10 digital piano is always ready to play, with a reassuringly authentic feel from the 88-note PHA-4 Standard keyboard, joined by Roland's evocative SuperNATURAL piano tones through onboard speakers or headphones. With its portable, space-saving design, the FP-10 is the ideal instrument for home use, whether you're practicing techniques in the spare room or giving performances in the living room. Plus, with Bluetooth connectivity and powerful onboard features not offered by any other digital model at this price, the FP-10 is the ideal second piano for more experienced players.

The FP-10's PHA-4 Standard keyboard delivers the responsive feel of a fine acoustic piano, with every nuance whether you play hard or soft captured by Roland's touch-detection technology. With high-resolution sensing and escapement for fast key repetition, the PHA-4 keyboard faithfully translates into sound the subtlest differences in dynamics and tone. The attention to detail continues as you notice a heavier hammer-weight in the low registers and a lighter one in the highs. Touch the white keys and youll be convinced by a revolutionary moisture-absorbing material that recreates the natural texture and tactile feel of real ivory and for expressive pedaling techniques such as half-pedaling, simply connect the optional DP-10 pedal.'

Alesis Recital 88-Key Beginner Digital Piano

$299.00

'Premium Feel and Sound
The Alesis Recital is a full-featured digital piano with 88 full-sized semi-weighted keys with adjustable touch response. The Recital features 5 realistic built-in voices: Acoustic Piano, Electric Piano, Organ, Synth, and Bass. Customize the voices by combining any two at once in Layer Mode for a full, rich tone. They can also be assigned to only the left or right hands in Split Mode. You can even add adjustable Reverb and Chorus to further tailor your sound. With powerful 20-watt built-in speakers and a 128-note maximum note polyphony, Recital delivers ultra-realistic sound with great playing experience.

Powerful Educational Features
The Alesis Recital has an incredibly useful feature called "Lesson Mode." This feature divides the 88 keys into two zones with the same pitch and voice. This enables both the student and teacher to easily watch each other and play together without having to take turns or reach over one another. Recital also features a ¼” (6.35mm) headphone output which mutes the internal speakers for convenient, quiet private practice.

All the Right Connections
In addition to the ¼” (6.35mm) sustain pedal input (pedal not included) and the ¼” (6.35mm) stereo headphone output, Recital also features stereo RCA outputs to connect to a recorder, mixer, amplifier or other sound system. Recital also features a USB-MIDI output for connecting to a computer and using educational software or virtual instrument plugins. Recital can be powered using the included power supply or by 6 D Cell batteries (not included).'

Key feel provides an authentic piano-playing experience.
The P-45 features a graded hammer standard (GHS) keyboard. The piano also features a keyboard with a natural feel, with black keys that feature a matte finish for authentic piano playing close to that of an acoustic piano.

Recreates the real reverberation of a grand piano.
The P-45 has improved on the traditional AWM synthesis to deliver real piano sounds. AWM is a technology that uses digital recordings of sources, such as actual instruments, and allows you to enjoy grand piano reverberation wherever you are.

Compact and light design provides for easy transportation.
Slim and stylish form With a depth of less than 30 cm, the instrument requires little space, and at only 11.5 kg - with its speaker attached - it can be easily moved anywhere in your home or even used for performance outside.
